Description

Money shows up in couples therapy all the time. How couples navigate it is shaped by much more than what is in their bank account. Family-of-origin experiences, gender, culture, financial anxiety, labor, access, and power all influence what money means and how partners respond when they disagree.

This clinical training moves beyond the content of financial conflict to the relational process underneath it. Drawing on the Developmental Model™ of Couples Therapy (Bader and Pearson), we look at money through the lens of differentiation and ask what each partner is able to do when confronted with financial difference.

Through clinical vignettes and common money conflicts, you will practice interventions and carefully chosen confrontation that move couples away from blame and avoidance and toward self-definition, accountability, and collaborative negotiation. This is a relational therapy training, not a financial-planning seminar.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Identify at least three ways that differentiation can influence how partners navigate financial anxiety, disagreement, decision-making, and responsibility.
  • Assess couples’ financial conflict from a systemic perspective that accounts for differentiation and is informed by family-of-origin messages, gender, labor distribution, power, and sociocultural context.
  • Apply developmentally informed clinical interventions and confrontations designed to increase self-definition, accountability, and partners’ capacity to navigate financial differences.
