Why this training
Anti-Racist Therapy 101 is a live, three-hour continuing education training for licensed and pre-licensed therapists on recognizing and treating racial trauma. It offers 3 NBCC continuing education hours through Lovewell Initiatives (NBCC ACEP No. 7776) and meets Washington State's health equity CE requirement (WAC 246-12-820). It is taught live on Zoom by Dr. Shawntres Parks, PhD, LMFT, CST, on Friday, December 11, 2026.
Most graduate programs spend little time on how racism actually shows up in a therapy room. It lives in the questions we ask during assessment, the diagnoses we reach for, and the small moments where a client's pain gets read as pathology instead of a reasonable response to harm.
This training gives you a working foundation. You will learn to recognize race-based traumatic stress, understand how it settles in the body, and hold a client's experience through a lens that accounts for history, systems, and the many identities a person carries at once. It is practical, grounded, and built for the realities of clinical work.
Four lenses for seeing racial trauma clearly
We move through each one with clinical examples and a case vignette you can apply the next day.
Somatic
How racialized trauma is held in the body, plus one brief settling practice you can use with clients in session.
Historical and political
How past and present harm shapes what a client brings into the room, and why context belongs in your clinical thinking.
Intersectional
How overlapping identities shape a presenting concern, practiced through a real case vignette.
What you will leave able to do
By the end of the three hours, you will be able to:
- Describe at least three ways systemic racism shows up in psychotherapy, including assessment, diagnosis, and the therapeutic relationship.
- Identify common signs of race-based traumatic stress and distinguish them from pathologizing diagnostic interpretations.
- Explain how racialized trauma can be held in the body, and demonstrate one brief somatic settling practice appropriate for session use.
- Apply an intersectional lens to a case vignette to identify at least two ways overlapping identities shape the presenting concern.
- Develop a personal practice plan naming at least two concrete changes to your clinical work.
Open to LMFTs, LPCCs and LPCs, LCSWs, psychologists, and other licensed and pre-licensed clinicians across the country. The health equity credit (WAC 246-12-820) applies to Washington State licensees.
Your Presenter
Dr. Shawntres Parks, PhD, LMFT, CST
Dr. Parks is a licensed marriage and family therapist and AASECT-certified sex therapist with more than a decade of clinical experience. Her work centers high-achieving women and couples of the global majority, helping people break cycles of emotional overfunctioning and build relationships rooted in mutual care, clarity, and connection. She draws on liberatory, somatic-based approaches to healing alongside advanced training in Imago relationship therapy and emotionally focused therapy, an approach she describes as grounded in both science and soul.
Her scholarship carries the same commitments, with doctoral research on posttraumatic growth in Black women who survived sexual abuse and published work on code-switching and clinical identity development among graduate trainees. Dr. Parks has been featured in Women's Health, Today.com, and the Daily Mail, and she is the creator of Responsible Daughter.

Who is this training for?
Licensed and pre-licensed clinicians across the country, including LMFTs, LPCCs and LPCs, LCSWs, and psychologists. If you sit with clients and want to work with race and trauma more skillfully, this is for you.
How do I get my CE certificate?
Attend the full live session, complete a short attendance check and the evaluation, and your certificate releases in your course right away.
Is this approved for continuing education?
Yes. Lovewell Initiatives, LLC is approved by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 7776, and is solely responsible for all aspects of the program.
