Description

Ethical practice would be much easier if every clinical situation came with a clearly marked line and a sign that said Boundary: Do Not Cross. Instead we navigate relationships, competing responsibilities, power, consent, and circumstances no ethics code can define.

This interactive follow-up to Professional Roles & Boundaries: Consent, Power, and Practice moves from understanding professional boundaries to practicing them within the complexity of real clinical relationships.

Participants begin with guided self-assessment designed to identify their own boundary vulnerabilities, the relational patterns, client dynamics, roles, and circumstances that make it harder to recognize or maintain a professional boundary. Rather than treating boundary crossings as failures of knowledge, we explore how rescuing, over-functioning, avoidance, over-identification, conflict avoidance, approval-seeking, rigidity, exceptionalism, and role diffusion influence clinical judgment.

From there we take a deeper look at consent in clinical practice, examining consent as an ongoing relational process rather than a one-time agreement, with attention to power, choice, transparency, role clarity, and the clinician’s responsibility for creating conditions in which meaningful consent is possible. Finally, participants apply a practical clinical consent guide through scenarios and discussion.

Part 1 is recommended as preparation and is not required.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

Recognize personal boundary vulnerabilities and describe how they may influence clinical relationships and professional decision-making.
Examine consent as an ongoing clinical practice influenced by power, choice, transparency, context, and role clarity, including how clinical specialization such as sex therapy shapes role clarity and context.
Apply a practical consent guide to identify when a clinical situation requires greater attention and determine an intentional and ethically responsive next step.
